Bull & Bear Markets - How They Work

The chart above compiled by Vanguard shows how the investment markets have performed over the last 120 years, in terms of Bear (values falling) and Bull (values rising) markets.
In summary, what the chart clearly demonstrates is that over a 9 year period, Bull markets last on average almost eight years, Bear markets a little over one year. In fact over the last 119 years there have been 103 ‘Bull years’, and 16 ‘Bear years’. We are clearly in the middle of a Bear market, which is a good time to be investing whilst prices are lower.
